Why and how can the language progresses from simplicity to complexity be a subject of research in literary texts? Subordinate complex sentences, due to their expandability through adverbial clauses, contribute to verbal complexity and semantic difficulty more than other types of sentences. In literary texts, this complexity is further intensified due to their metaphorical nature. Conditional clauses, as common adverbial clauses, express conditions in the introductory clause, which if realized, the consequent clause will also be realized. The significance of conditional clauses lies in changing the mode of proposition to a subjunctive mood, creating modality, and reflecting the speaker's intellectual and attitudinal layer towards probable or potential events in the past, present, and future. Analyzing conditional clauses requires examining their intra-clausal relationships and decoding the probability or improbability of their realization. Ferdowsi employs conditional clauses in the Shahnameh to develop the narrative. This paper employs analytical-descriptive methods to analyze conditional clauses in the story of Rostam and Sohrab. The study seeks to find the type of intra-clausal relationships in conditional propositions. It also tries to find out which relationship better suits the epic content. The findings suggest that predictive conditionals for having three characteristics of imagination, suspension, and pursuit; counterfactual conditionals for manifesting the human incapacity against fate, and speech act conditionals for paving the way for discourse exhibit the highest level of compatibility with the story of Rostam and Sohrab.
