In classical rhetoric, uslub al-hakim, or the wise response, involves departing from the apparent requirements of an utterance and redirecting a response toward a more appropriate meaning. This study examines its forms and functions in Asrar al-Tawhid through three questions: How does this device appear in the work? What semantic, epistemic, and educational functions does it perform? How does it contribute to guiding the audience and establishing Abu Saʿid Abu al-Khayr’s spiritual authority? Using a descriptive–analytical method and library research, the study interprets relevant anecdotes and dialogues. The findings identify three modes: shifting the relationship between signifier and signified, redefining fundamental concepts, and communicative action through behavior. Their principal functions are spiritual awakening and admonition, the revision of attitudes and understanding, and the consolidation of the shaykh’s authority. By connecting language, behavior, and situational context, the wise response turns dialogue into a process of mystical education and active participation in interpretation.
