Sohrab Sepehri is one of the trendsetting figures of contemporary Persian poetry, whose imagery and mysticism have always been the focus of critics; however, the components of humor and their functions in his intellectual system have rarely been analyzed independently. Characterized by a descriptive-analytical method, the present study aims to explain the humor-creating techniques in Sepehri’s poetry, focusing on three collections: The Water’s Footsteps, The Traveler, and The Green Volume. The findings indicate that Sepehri’s humor is gentle, imagistic, and philosophical (Horatian) in nature, lacking the hostility of classical lampoons. Utilizing seven primary techniques-namely “concise witticisms,” “minimization of concepts,” “fantastic magnification,” “contradiction,” “linguistic play and polysemy,” “deconstruction of established symbols,” and “juxtaposition of incongruous subjects”-Sepehri represents his worldview. This study demonstrates that humor in Sepehri’s poetry is the missing link that connects his pantheistic mysticism (unity of existence) to his painterly surrealism. Indeed, this humorous expression serves as an artistic and ironic tool to critique stereotyped structures, ideologies, and the civilization of iron and cement, which, far from slogan-mongering, formulates the poet’s social and philosophical protest and plays a significant role in enriching the linguistic and semantic dimensions of his poetry.
