This article investigates the interaction between two distinct yet complementary metaphorical systems in Ata-Malik Juvayni’s historical prose. Drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, David Herman’s cognitive narratology (specifically narrative steering), and conceptual metonymy, this study demonstrates how domain contiguity channels meaning, enabling Juvayni to transfigure historical reportage into a reflective, fatalistic narrative. The findings reveal that conceptual metaphors across four primary target domains—Invasion = Uncontrollable Natural Forces, Fortune/Time = A Deceptive Spectacle, Society = A Diseased Body, and The Enemy = Monstrous Predators—shape the narrative’s cognitive architecture. Concurrently, rhetorical metaphors (pictorial, reifying, and personifying) infuse this framework with an elegiac, emotionally charged tone. Ultimately, metaphor functions here as a dual cognitive-rhetorical apparatus that naturalizes violence, diminishes human agency, and fosters emotional empathy alongside cognitive resignation—thereby transforming historical narration into an ideological vehicle for reproducing fatalistic grief.
