Radif is one of the most prominent musical and semantic elements of the Persian ghazal which, in addition to its phonetic function, can also play a significant role in organizing syntactic structure and directing meaning at the grammatical level. Focusing on Hafez’s ghazals, the present study examines radif from the perspective of grammatical roles and seeks to answer the question of what syntactic and grammatical functions radif assumes in Hafez’s poetry and how its repetitive presence influences sentence structure and semantic coherence within the verses. The aim of this research is to classify different types of radif based on their grammatical roles and to analyze the structural and functional differences among them in the context of the ghazal.
The research adopts a library-based methodology, and the data have been collected through the examination and extraction of relevant examples from Hafez’s ghazals. The analytical approach is descriptive–analytical; that is, after identifying and categorizing radifs according to their syntactic roles, the structural features and semantic functions of each category are analyzed. The findings indicate that verbal radifs are the most frequent type in Hafez’s ghazals and, by stabilizing the actional axis of the sentence, enhance semantic dynamism and propositional orientation. Compound radifs follow in frequency and, due to their broader structural scope, play a decisive role in completing the syntactic structure of the final hemistich. Nominal, pronominal, adverbial, and adjectival radifs also appear in the ghazals, each functioning in accordance with its syntactic position as subject, predicate, adverbial element, or descriptive modifier. Overall, radif in Hafez’s ghazals is not merely a musical device but a structurally and semantically productive element that contributes significantly to syntactic coherence and the highlighting of meaning within the verse..
