Allegory is one of the most significant rhetorical tools in Mowlana’s works, which he uses to convey mystical, ethical, and didactic concepts. Mowlana’s letters, addressed to a diverse audience from different social backgrounds, are filled with both short and long allegories, each composed with various intentions. However, a systematic study of the allegories found in Mowlana’s letters (Maktoobat) has not yet received serious attention. This research, using a descriptive-analytical approach and based on statistical analysis, examines the types of allegories employed in Mowlana’s letters and their rhetorical functions. It aims to answer the following questions: What kinds of allegories does Mowlana use in the Maktoobat? Which allegories are most frequently used? And what functions do these allegories serve in his letters? The findings indicate that Mowlana predominantly employs descriptive allegories in his letters, while narrative allegories are used more sparingly. Ersal al-mathal—a type of short allegory—has the highest frequency, reflecting Mowlana’s intent to emphasize, persuade, and legitimize his words by drawing on common wisdom and linguistic traditions. Extended allegories, especially fables and parables, are rarely used in the letters. This can be attributed to the practical and didactic nature of the Maktoobat, which calls for greater conciseness and clarity.Furthermore, an analysis of the functions of allegories shows that explanatory and motivational functions are most prominent in Mowlana’s letters, whereas argumentative and critical functions are less frequent. This suggests that Mowlana’s primary concern in these letters is to provide practical guidance and inspire his readers, rather than to present complex arguments. Therefore, by offering a precise understanding of how Mowlana employs allegory in his Maktoobat, this study contributes to a better appreciation of his rhetorical and communicative style in his epistolary writings.
