Linguistic and Rhetorical Features of Borhan ol-Din Mohaghghegh Termazi’s Maarif

Abstract

Among the works that are included in the category of Maarif-nameh is the book Maarif by Borhan ol-Din Hosein al- Mohaghghegh al-Termazi (561-638), a disciple of Baha'u'llah and teacher of Rumi. This article intends to use analytical-descriptive method, examine the style of Maarif of Borhan ol-Din Mohaghghegh Termazi and in this way, answer the two main questions: What is The stylistic structure of Maarif of Borhan ol-Din Mohaghghegh Termazi from linguistic aspects (phonetic, lexical, syntactic), literary-rhetorical and intellectual? Which stylistic features are there in this work which also exist in the literary genre of Maarif? This article in a few steps, has answered the questions raised. The results show that the use of words and expressions of the speech genre, as well as the syntax and grammatical structure of the text, are influenced by the style of public speaking and sermon delivery. Repetition of sentence elements, use of co-ordinate sentences, use of different functions of verb tenses in speech, integration of the text with verses and hadiths and Quranic and narrative allusions, use of expressive means to add to the attractiveness of the speech and the impact on the audience, etc. are among the noteworthy components of Maarif of Borhan ol-Din Mohaghghegh Termazi, which is also used in other texts of the Maarif-nameh literary genre. Given the deep connection between the language, rhetoric, and intellectual and ideological level of the text with the situational context of its formation, the text has also been briefly examined from an ideological and content perspective.
