Abstract

Researching ancient texts - in addition to being fascinating - has difficulties for today's enthusiasts which is not possible except with acumen and contemplation. If these texts are also adorned with artifact and pompous prose, it doubles the importance of the work. One of the books that, due to its historical, literary and cultural dimensions, has attracted the attention of those interested and caused writing of valuable works, is Attamalek Jovini's Tārikh- ‘i-Jahāngushā. This book is the cause of emergence of various literary sciences, including the topics of the science of semantics and especially periphrasis. The frequency of periphrasis and its types in this book is to the extent that it attracts every interested person to search for it comprehensively. This research, by using the inductive method based on analysis and by reviewing several times all three volumes of Tārikh- ‘i-Jahāngushā, seeks - by giving preference to Arabic sentences and phrases - to examine the different methods of periphrasis and to criticize and analyze their types. The result of the research shows that according to the volume and type of the work - and with caution - periphrasis in this book has the highest frequency in prose texts of Persian language and literature. Also, the frequency of co-ordinate conjunctions and co-ordinate sentences in this book, is one of the other results that can be considered the attractiveness of this research.
