Abstract

Brevity is one of the important topics in the knowledge of meanings and is considered one of the pillars of rhetoric in speech, of course, sometimes there are reasons that disrupt this method and prevent it from its main function, which is to convey the message well and quickly. But the texts of Persian rhetoric have not paid attention to these causes of disturbances and have not regulated and compiled them. Therefore, it is necessary to examine and criticize the topic of disturbing brevity and carefully analyze these reasons in the definitions and examples of the mentioned topic. In the following article, an attempt has been made to review the definitions of disturbing brevity by analytical-critical re-reading of Persian rhetorical texts and to find the causes of disturbing brevity among these definitions and examples. The analysis of the data of this research shows that, although the texts of Persian rhetoric have expressed disturbing brevity and even sometimes examples containing this defect, but usually the definitions of disturbing brevity are vague, general and inconsistent with its examples, and there is no mentioning of the causes of disruption in brevity or if there is a reason, it is also inconsistent with the mentioned example. Another point is that the cause of the disturbance in speech is a linguistic rule, not a cultural one. Therefore, the main thing should be the language, not the audience. The causes of brevity in Persian rhetorical texts are the omission and non-observance of linguistic and grammatical rules. These two reasons are different according to the amount of disturbance they cause in the summary speech.
